Narrative:
A thunderstorm cell was located over wavie, radar showed the cell as red. Approach gave us an intercept heading that would take us through the cell, we refused and were given vectors away from the approach course. Approach vectored us back around for another try. During this time, several other aircraft flew through the same area, and one other refused. After approach tried to take us back through the red area (which we again refused), we were told they would have to clear us out of the area until we could accept their vectors. By the time we made a third try, the cell had moved off the approach course and we proceeded to a normal landing. ATC seemed completely unconcerned that we would be in violation of company's policies/FARS (not to mention compromising safety of flight) if we accepted their clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 CREW INBOUND TO ORD REFUSED A TURN TOWARD A TSTM CELL AND WERE TURNED OUT OF THE AREA UNTIL THEY COULD ACCEPT VECTORS BY APCH CTL.
Narrative: A TSTM CELL WAS LOCATED OVER WAVIE, RADAR SHOWED THE CELL AS RED. APCH GAVE US AN INTERCEPT HDG THAT WOULD TAKE US THROUGH THE CELL, WE REFUSED AND WERE GIVEN VECTORS AWAY FROM THE APCH COURSE. APCH VECTORED US BACK AROUND FOR ANOTHER TRY. DURING THIS TIME, SEVERAL OTHER ACFT FLEW THROUGH THE SAME AREA, AND ONE OTHER REFUSED. AFTER APCH TRIED TO TAKE US BACK THROUGH THE RED AREA (WHICH WE AGAIN REFUSED), WE WERE TOLD THEY WOULD HAVE TO CLR US OUT OF THE AREA UNTIL WE COULD ACCEPT THEIR VECTORS. BY THE TIME WE MADE A THIRD TRY, THE CELL HAD MOVED OFF THE APCH COURSE AND WE PROCEEDED TO A NORMAL LNDG. ATC SEEMED COMPLETELY UNCONCERNED THAT WE WOULD BE IN VIOLATION OF COMPANY'S POLICIES/FARS (NOT TO MENTION COMPROMISING SAFETY OF FLT) IF WE ACCEPTED THEIR CLRNC.
