Narrative:
Flight ZZZ on aug/sat/04, diverted with a left generator drive light and was subsequently disconnected by the flight crew. I corrected the problem by interrogating the bpcu (bus power control unit) and replaced the gcu (generator control unit). The fault codes were 24355-01 and 24314-11 with probable causes idg and gcu. I replaced the gcu from stock per maintenance manual and had the pilot run the engine and successfully checked it out. I performed an ETOPS predep check and dispatched the aircraft. The maintenance coordinator discovered that the fault codes generated, required an idg replacement. After several flts with no problems the aircraft was scheduled for an idg replacement precautionary on aug/mon/04. I am disclosing this because there was an oversight between the fim (fault information manual) and the bpcu (bus power control unit).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B767-400ER WAS DISPATCHED OVERWATER AFTER L GENERATOR MAINT. LATER DISCOVERED THAT INBOUND FAULT CODES REQUIRED INTEGRATED DRIVE GENERATOR REPLACEMENT.
Narrative: FLT ZZZ ON AUG/SAT/04, DIVERTED WITH A L GENERATOR DRIVE LIGHT AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY DISCONNECTED BY THE FLT CREW. I CORRECTED THE PROB BY INTERROGATING THE BPCU (BUS PWR CTL UNIT) AND REPLACED THE GCU (GENERATOR CTL UNIT). THE FAULT CODES WERE 24355-01 AND 24314-11 WITH PROBABLE CAUSES IDG AND GCU. I REPLACED THE GCU FROM STOCK PER MAINT MANUAL AND HAD THE PLT RUN THE ENG AND SUCCESSFULLY CHKED IT OUT. I PERFORMED AN ETOPS PREDEP CHK AND DISPATCHED THE ACFT. THE MAINT COORDINATOR DISCOVERED THAT THE FAULT CODES GENERATED, REQUIRED AN IDG REPLACEMENT. AFTER SEVERAL FLTS WITH NO PROBS THE ACFT WAS SCHEDULED FOR AN IDG REPLACEMENT PRECAUTIONARY ON AUG/MON/04. I AM DISCLOSING THIS BECAUSE THERE WAS AN OVERSIGHT BTWN THE FIM (FAULT INFO MANUAL) AND THE BPCU (BUS PWR CTL UNIT).
