Narrative:

Climbing through FL200 we got a hydraulic system #2 high temperature warning message on EICAS. This calls for memory items (though it is still technically an abnormal procedure), which were accomplished. The system #2 shutoff valve, however, did not close. Fluid temperature was noted in excess of 110 degrees C and fluid quantity was noted dropping rapidly. The QRH procedures direct a precautionary (affected) engine shutdown, which was accomplished. ATC was notified, emergency declared and return to tpa (our departure point) was started. The flight attendants were briefed and we also advised the passenger on the situation and to expect a normal approach and landing and to expect to see emergency vehicles as a safety precaution. Subsequently an uneventful approach and landing were made on runway 18R at tpa. (After the #2 engine was shut down, fluid temperature of hydraulic system #2 dropped to more normal levels, although quantity had dropped to only 5% indicated.) throughout, tpa station personnel was advised of the return and company dispatcher was notified and consulted.

Title: CRJ700 CREW HAD A HIGH HYD TEMP MESSAGE IN EICAS. THE SYS #2 HYD SHUTOFF VALVE WOULD NOT CLOSE. AFTER LOSING HYD FLUID THEY WERE FORCED TO HAVE A PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN.

Narrative: CLBING THROUGH FL200 WE GOT A HYD SYS #2 HIGH TEMP WARNING MESSAGE ON EICAS. THIS CALLS FOR MEMORY ITEMS (THOUGH IT IS STILL TECHNICALLY AN ABNORMAL PROC), WHICH WERE ACCOMPLISHED. THE SYS #2 SHUTOFF VALVE, HOWEVER, DID NOT CLOSE. FLUID TEMP WAS NOTED IN EXCESS OF 110 DEGS C AND FLUID QUANTITY WAS NOTED DROPPING RAPIDLY. THE QRH PROCS DIRECT A PRECAUTIONARY (AFFECTED) ENG SHUTDOWN, WHICH WAS ACCOMPLISHED. ATC WAS NOTIFIED, EMER DECLARED AND RETURN TO TPA (OUR DEP POINT) WAS STARTED. THE FLT ATTENDANTS WERE BRIEFED AND WE ALSO ADVISED THE PAX ON THE SIT AND TO EXPECT A NORMAL APCH AND LNDG AND TO EXPECT TO SEE EMER VEHICLES AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION. SUBSEQUENTLY AN UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG WERE MADE ON RWY 18R AT TPA. (AFTER THE #2 ENG WAS SHUT DOWN, FLUID TEMP OF HYD SYS #2 DROPPED TO MORE NORMAL LEVELS, ALTHOUGH QUANTITY HAD DROPPED TO ONLY 5% INDICATED.) THROUGHOUT, TPA STATION PERSONNEL WAS ADVISED OF THE RETURN AND COMPANY DISPATCHER WAS NOTIFIED AND CONSULTED.
