Narrative:
Early morning departure and pvd tower was just opening up. We called for pushback and was advised to hold for traffic on taxiway T immediately behind us. Several aircraft passed behind us. About the same time, tower advised 'cleared to push after aircraft X passes behind you.' there were no aircraft in sight for about 1 min, so we assumed that aircraft X was in the group that already passed. As we got to our pushed back position, we observed aircraft X was just turning onto the taxiway about 1500 ft away. The tug was already disconnected so aircraft X had to wait about 1 min for us to begin taxi. We should have asked if we were unclr on the directions. The ground controller possibly should not issue a confidential clearance if the traffic is so far away. At night and in reduced visibility, there might have been a collision potential.

Title: THE RPTR PUSHED BACK OFF THE GATE AFTER BEING TOLD TO HOLD FOR ACR X. THAT ACFT HAD NOT PASSED WHEN THE RPTR PUSHED BACK AND SO A TXWY WAS BLOCKED.
Narrative: EARLY MORNING DEP AND PVD TWR WAS JUST OPENING UP. WE CALLED FOR PUSHBACK AND WAS ADVISED TO HOLD FOR TFC ON TXWY T IMMEDIATELY BEHIND US. SEVERAL ACFT PASSED BEHIND US. ABOUT THE SAME TIME, TWR ADVISED 'CLRED TO PUSH AFTER ACFT X PASSES BEHIND YOU.' THERE WERE NO ACFT IN SIGHT FOR ABOUT 1 MIN, SO WE ASSUMED THAT ACFT X WAS IN THE GROUP THAT ALREADY PASSED. AS WE GOT TO OUR PUSHED BACK POS, WE OBSERVED ACFT X WAS JUST TURNING ONTO THE TXWY ABOUT 1500 FT AWAY. THE TUG WAS ALREADY DISCONNECTED SO ACFT X HAD TO WAIT ABOUT 1 MIN FOR US TO BEGIN TAXI. WE SHOULD HAVE ASKED IF WE WERE UNCLR ON THE DIRECTIONS. THE GND CTLR POSSIBLY SHOULD NOT ISSUE A CONFIDENTIAL CLRNC IF THE TFC IS SO FAR AWAY. AT NIGHT AND IN REDUCED VISIBILITY, THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A COLLISION POTENTIAL.
