Narrative:
At caldwell, nj, I was given taxi clearance to taxi to runway 22, crossing runway 27, which is at the intersection of runway 22, and back-taxi to the end of runway 22. After taxiing onto runway 22 (I did look for approaching traffic prior to entering the runway) the ground controller told me I should have back-taxied on runway 27 to a very short taxiway between runway 27 and the end of runway 22. He may have said it right and I heard it wrong. It is a little confusing to someone there for the first time. Human performance considerations: I had flown up to the new york area that morning, about 4.5 hours of flight time, and was departing for the return trip. Fatigue and being 'ready to go' may have played a role in my missing the taxi instructions.
