Narrative:

Acquired aircraft with inoperative APU. After normal external air start, taxi, takeoff, #4 general fail EICAS alert during climb. Applied flight manual guidance checklist procedures and were unable to restore system. Due to dispatching into heavy rains and widespread low visibility, it only seemed prudent to return to base with the remaining 3 generators. Alternate airport requirement was far and few and I did not want to proceed with having to deal with the potential, however, remote chance of losing the engine with the remaining 2 operating generators.
