Narrative:
As we were approaching pmm at FL310, I had gone to the lavatory. While I was out of the cockpit, the first officer received a clearance to cross claud at FL200. He entered the new flight level in the altitude control but did not initiate the descent right away. I returned to the cockpit and the first officer took his turn to the lavatory. I was not aware of the crossing restr until the first officer returned to the cockpit just as ATC told us to start the descent. They also gave us a frequency change. The new ATC controller gave us a new clearance to cross story at 10000 ft, before we had reached claud. We crossed claud at approximately FL240 and made the story clearance. I failed to scan the control panel when I returned to the cockpit which would have prevented this incident. Supplemental information from acn 632054: I was given a clearance to cross claud at FL200. At that time the captain was in the lavatory. When he returned he was not informed of the crossing at claud.

Title: A B737 CREW FAILS TO BEGIN DSCNT IN TIME TO COMPLY WITH A PREVIOUSLY GIVEN XING RESTR. ONLY 1 PLT WAS IN THE COCKPIT WHEN THE CLRNC WAS RECEIVED.
Narrative: AS WE WERE APCHING PMM AT FL310, I HAD GONE TO THE LAVATORY. WHILE I WAS OUT OF THE COCKPIT, THE FO RECEIVED A CLRNC TO CROSS CLAUD AT FL200. HE ENTERED THE NEW FLT LEVEL IN THE ALT CTL BUT DID NOT INITIATE THE DSCNT RIGHT AWAY. I RETURNED TO THE COCKPIT AND THE FO TOOK HIS TURN TO THE LAVATORY. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE XING RESTR UNTIL THE FO RETURNED TO THE COCKPIT JUST AS ATC TOLD US TO START THE DSCNT. THEY ALSO GAVE US A FREQ CHANGE. THE NEW ATC CTLR GAVE US A NEW CLRNC TO CROSS STORY AT 10000 FT, BEFORE WE HAD REACHED CLAUD. WE CROSSED CLAUD AT APPROX FL240 AND MADE THE STORY CLRNC. I FAILED TO SCAN THE CTL PANEL WHEN I RETURNED TO THE COCKPIT WHICH WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS INCIDENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 632054: I WAS GIVEN A CLRNC TO CROSS CLAUD AT FL200. AT THAT TIME THE CAPT WAS IN THE LAVATORY. WHEN HE RETURNED HE WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE XING AT CLAUD.
