Narrative:
Conducting radar training, trainee misjudged vector distance. I instructed trainee to turn aircraft Y 30 degrees left. Separation was achieved. Awareness that 2 F-18's was a formation flight was recognized too late to achieve additional separation required for formation flight. Enhancement to our display could have helped. My trainee displays the type of aircraft in the data block. Simply allowing this display to show number of aircraft when applicable would have avoided this error.

Title: ZID CTLR EXPERIENCED OPERROR AT FL280 NEGLECTING TO INCREASE REQUIRED SEPARATION FOR FLT FORMATION.
Narrative: CONDUCTING RADAR TRAINING, TRAINEE MISJUDGED VECTOR DISTANCE. I INSTRUCTED TRAINEE TO TURN ACFT Y 30 DEGS L. SEPARATION WAS ACHIEVED. AWARENESS THAT 2 F-18'S WAS A FORMATION FLT WAS RECOGNIZED TOO LATE TO ACHIEVE ADDITIONAL SEPARATION REQUIRED FOR FORMATION FLT. ENHANCEMENT TO OUR DISPLAY COULD HAVE HELPED. MY TRAINEE DISPLAYS THE TYPE OF ACFT IN THE DATA BLOCK. SIMPLY ALLOWING THIS DISPLAY TO SHOW NUMBER OF ACFT WHEN APPLICABLE WOULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS ERROR.
