Narrative:
Upon being instructed by ground control to 'taxi to runway 22, intersection north,' I proceeded to taxi all the way to runway 22 which meant I crossed runway 27. I realized, while already committed to crossing, that I was on an active runway, and decided to continue to avoid staying longer on an active runway. I did see a plane holding on runway 27 (not moving) and immediately received a call from the ground controller on the issue. Upon landing at my destination airport 30 mins later, I called the tower. The ground controller told me I had crossed over runway 27 without authority/authorized. The confusion arose from me assuming 'taxi to runway 22 allowed me to go the full route.' the controller did not say 'hold short of runway 27' so I assumed I could cross it. Other factors were my lack of familiarity with procedures at the airport given I am coming off a long hiatus without flying, especially in controled airports. Controllers indicated that separation was not lost but this was still an incident that needed to be reported. I believe if I had heard a 'hold short of runway 27' instruction, or 'hold for instructions before crossing' the incident could have been avoided.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RWY INCURSION AS C172 PVT PLT CROSSES ACTIVE RWY 27 AFTER MISUNDERSTANDING THE INITIAL CLRNC FROM GND CTLR FOR PLANNED INTXN TKOF ON RWY 22 AT CDW.
Narrative: UPON BEING INSTRUCTED BY GND CTL TO 'TAXI TO RWY 22, INTXN N,' I PROCEEDED TO TAXI ALL THE WAY TO RWY 22 WHICH MEANT I CROSSED RWY 27. I REALIZED, WHILE ALREADY COMMITTED TO XING, THAT I WAS ON AN ACTIVE RWY, AND DECIDED TO CONTINUE TO AVOID STAYING LONGER ON AN ACTIVE RWY. I DID SEE A PLANE HOLDING ON RWY 27 (NOT MOVING) AND IMMEDIATELY RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE GND CTLR ON THE ISSUE. UPON LNDG AT MY DEST ARPT 30 MINS LATER, I CALLED THE TWR. THE GND CTLR TOLD ME I HAD CROSSED OVER RWY 27 WITHOUT AUTH. THE CONFUSION AROSE FROM ME ASSUMING 'TAXI TO RWY 22 ALLOWED ME TO GO THE FULL RTE.' THE CTLR DID NOT SAY 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27' SO I ASSUMED I COULD CROSS IT. OTHER FACTORS WERE MY LACK OF FAMILIARITY WITH PROCS AT THE ARPT GIVEN I AM COMING OFF A LONG HIATUS WITHOUT FLYING, ESPECIALLY IN CTLED ARPTS. CTLRS INDICATED THAT SEPARATION WAS NOT LOST BUT THIS WAS STILL AN INCIDENT THAT NEEDED TO BE RPTED. I BELIEVE IF I HAD HEARD A 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27' INSTRUCTION, OR 'HOLD FOR INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE XING' THE INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED.
