Narrative:
This event occurred as the result of an inspection of the #1 main wheel and brake assembly due to smoke coming from the #1 axle after taxi in to gate in ZZZ. After the inspection was completed and the necessary maintenance action taken the aircraft was returned to service. After the aircraft had departed ZZZ, the amt that performed the work and the amt that inspected the work realized that they were unsure if the locking screws for the #1 main wheel axle nut had been safety wired. The air carrier was notified as soon as the possibility of a mistake was realized. The air carrier had the aircraft reinspected to ensure that the #1 axle nut locking screws were secured and safetied. The only prevention for this type of event is to pay closer attention to detail, aircraft maintenance manuals and inspection procedures.

Title: AN MD80 WAS DISPATCHED AFTER A MAIN WHEEL AND TIRE INSTALLATION. TECHNICIANS INVOLVED WERE UNSURE IF AXLE NUT LOCK SCREW WAS SAFETIED. DOWN-LINE CHK FOUND SCREW SAFETIED.
Narrative: THIS EVENT OCCURRED AS THE RESULT OF AN INSPECTION OF THE #1 MAIN WHEEL AND BRAKE ASSEMBLY DUE TO SMOKE COMING FROM THE #1 AXLE AFTER TAXI IN TO GATE IN ZZZ. AFTER THE INSPECTION WAS COMPLETED AND THE NECESSARY MAINT ACTION TAKEN THE ACFT WAS RETURNED TO SVC. AFTER THE ACFT HAD DEPARTED ZZZ, THE AMT THAT PERFORMED THE WORK AND THE AMT THAT INSPECTED THE WORK REALIZED THAT THEY WERE UNSURE IF THE LOCKING SCREWS FOR THE #1 MAIN WHEEL AXLE NUT HAD BEEN SAFETY WIRED. THE ACR WAS NOTIFIED AS SOON AS THE POSSIBILITY OF A MISTAKE WAS REALIZED. THE ACR HAD THE ACFT REINSPECTED TO ENSURE THAT THE #1 AXLE NUT LOCKING SCREWS WERE SECURED AND SAFETIED. THE ONLY PREVENTION FOR THIS TYPE OF EVENT IS TO PAY CLOSER ATTN TO DETAIL, ACFT MAINT MANUALS AND INSPECTION PROCS.
