Narrative:
Flight ZZZ to ZZZ1 was uneventful. Reporting for the outbound flight the next day, we were told that the aircraft we brought in the night before was OTS. Maintenance inspection revealed damage in the area of the left wheel well. Most probably during the takeoff from ZZZ, the air load forced a panel, that was not properly secured, aft far enough to be caught by the landing gear during retraction. This caused damage to the panel, gear well, and the underside of the wing. We were told the maintenance man who previously worked on a system behind that panel has written a safety report about his repair. The fasteners used to secure the panel are of a type that make it difficult to tell by observation if they are properly tightened. Visual inspections made during first officer's walkaround would not likely catch that the panel was not properly secured.

Title: AN MD80 HAD A PANEL IN THE L WHEEL WELL COME LOOSE AND ON GEAR RETRACTION DAMAGED THE PANEL AND UNDERSIDE OF THE L WING.
Narrative: FLT ZZZ TO ZZZ1 WAS UNEVENTFUL. RPTING FOR THE OUTBOUND FLT THE NEXT DAY, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE ACFT WE BROUGHT IN THE NIGHT BEFORE WAS OTS. MAINT INSPECTION REVEALED DAMAGE IN THE AREA OF THE L WHEEL WELL. MOST PROBABLY DURING THE TKOF FROM ZZZ, THE AIR LOAD FORCED A PANEL, THAT WAS NOT PROPERLY SECURED, AFT FAR ENOUGH TO BE CAUGHT BY THE LNDG GEAR DURING RETRACTION. THIS CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE PANEL, GEAR WELL, AND THE UNDERSIDE OF THE WING. WE WERE TOLD THE MAINT MAN WHO PREVIOUSLY WORKED ON A SYS BEHIND THAT PANEL HAS WRITTEN A SAFETY RPT ABOUT HIS REPAIR. THE FASTENERS USED TO SECURE THE PANEL ARE OF A TYPE THAT MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO TELL BY OBSERVATION IF THEY ARE PROPERLY TIGHTENED. VISUAL INSPECTIONS MADE DURING FO'S WALKAROUND WOULD NOT LIKELY CATCH THAT THE PANEL WAS NOT PROPERLY SECURED.
