Narrative:
I was cleared by ground control to taxi from the GA ramp to runway 31. As I was approaching taxiway F on taxiway a, I saw a DHC8 stopped at the bend in the taxiway before runway 31, (where I presumed to hold short line to be) not realizing that the hold short line was actually immediately following taxiway F, so I continued taxiing to the spot where I presumed the hold short line to be, (past the actual hold line). Ground control asked me to hold my position as I was becoming aware of the error I had made, and contact tower. I contacted tower, and asked them if they would like me to make a 180 degrees on the taxiway as I had missed the hold short line and they said it would not be necessary. The problem arose because I had a preconceived idea of where the hold short line should be. A contributing factor as the military ramp, with special operations C130's that caught my attention right where the hold short lines area. I discovered the problem when I was approaching the turn in the taxiway to see no hold short lines ahead, so I realized they must be behind me. I will correct this action by never presuming where hold short lines are again, but I also feel that ground control should point out non standard hold points verbally.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PA31 PLT TAXIING FOR DEP AT MDT CROSSED HOLD LINES FOR RWY 31.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED BY GND CTL TO TAXI FROM THE GA RAMP TO RWY 31. AS I WAS APCHING TXWY F ON TXWY A, I SAW A DHC8 STOPPED AT THE BEND IN THE TXWY BEFORE RWY 31, (WHERE I PRESUMED TO HOLD SHORT LINE TO BE) NOT REALIZING THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINE WAS ACTUALLY IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING TXWY F, SO I CONTINUED TAXIING TO THE SPOT WHERE I PRESUMED THE HOLD SHORT LINE TO BE, (PAST THE ACTUAL HOLD LINE). GND CTL ASKED ME TO HOLD MY POS AS I WAS BECOMING AWARE OF THE ERROR I HAD MADE, AND CONTACT TWR. I CONTACTED TWR, AND ASKED THEM IF THEY WOULD LIKE ME TO MAKE A 180 DEGS ON THE TXWY AS I HAD MISSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND THEY SAID IT WOULD NOT BE NECESSARY. THE PROB AROSE BECAUSE I HAD A PRECONCEIVED IDEA OF WHERE THE HOLD SHORT LINE SHOULD BE. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR AS THE MIL RAMP, WITH SPECIAL OPS C130'S THAT CAUGHT MY ATTN RIGHT WHERE THE HOLD SHORT LINES AREA. I DISCOVERED THE PROB WHEN I WAS APCHING THE TURN IN THE TXWY TO SEE NO HOLD SHORT LINES AHEAD, SO I REALIZED THEY MUST BE BEHIND ME. I WILL CORRECT THIS ACTION BY NEVER PRESUMING WHERE HOLD SHORT LINES ARE AGAIN, BUT I ALSO FEEL THAT GND CTL SHOULD POINT OUT NON STANDARD HOLD POINTS VERBALLY.
