Narrative:
We were holding short of runway 4 awaiting takeoff clearance. The tower amended our initial altitude of 2000 ft MSL, then cleared us for takeoff on runway 4. I released the brakes and began to roll forward as I asked the first officer for the 'runway items' checklist. Almost immediately, as the first officer looked to the right to verify we were clear on final, he saw an air carrier aircraft on very short final landing on our runway. He (the first officer) instinctively shouted 'oh #@!*' and hit the brakes. We stopped well short of the runway, approximately 4-5 ft beyond the hold short line. The air carrier did not deviate and landed normally. The controller apologized to the air carrier aircraft and to us and then reclred us into position to hold on runway 4. After air carrier cleared the runway, we were given takeoff clearance and departed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR CREW TAXIING INTO POS AND CLRED FOR TKOF ON THE ACTIVE RWY PERFORMED AN EMER STOP TO REMAIN CLR OF THE LNDG AREA BECAUSE OF TFC ON SHORT FINAL.
Narrative: WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 4 AWAITING TKOF CLRNC. THE TWR AMENDED OUR INITIAL ALT OF 2000 FT MSL, THEN CLRED US FOR TKOF ON RWY 4. I RELEASED THE BRAKES AND BEGAN TO ROLL FORWARD AS I ASKED THE FO FOR THE 'RWY ITEMS' CHKLIST. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, AS THE FO LOOKED TO THE R TO VERIFY WE WERE CLR ON FINAL, HE SAW AN ACR ACFT ON VERY SHORT FINAL LNDG ON OUR RWY. HE (THE FO) INSTINCTIVELY SHOUTED 'OH #@!*' AND HIT THE BRAKES. WE STOPPED WELL SHORT OF THE RWY, APPROX 4-5 FT BEYOND THE HOLD SHORT LINE. THE ACR DID NOT DEVIATE AND LANDED NORMALLY. THE CTLR APOLOGIZED TO THE ACR ACFT AND TO US AND THEN RECLRED US INTO POS TO HOLD ON RWY 4. AFTER ACR CLRED THE RWY, WE WERE GIVEN TKOF CLRNC AND DEPARTED.
