While en route, left engine egt spiked. Called dispatch and maintenance. Referred to checklist and exercised captain's emergency authority/authorized. Decision made to divert to ZZZ. Landed safely, no injuries and no damage. Plane has a history of false egt indications. All parties involved decided to divert to play it safe.
