Narrative:
Leading edge slat light illuminated during the approach. During the approach to runway 22L at jfk at approximately 1500 ft MSL the leading edge slat asymmetry message appeared on the EICAS screen along with the leading edge slat light. The first officer was flying and commanded gear down, flaps 20 degrees when the asymmetry occurred. I ran the checklist and we landed uneventfully.
