Narrative:
Single pilot king air captain. First time to slc. Morning departure (XA00), IFR to lit. Windshield had moisture/condensation. I copied clearance and requested taxi from FBO for departure. Ground said, 'taxi to runway 17.' I used wipers to clear windshield, but it only cleared a portion of windshield. The parallel taxiway I should have used was obstructed from my vision by B737 parked long-ways to my left front. I saw an entrance to what I thought was the taxiway to my far left. (I knew the taxiway was a parallel and to my left from the airport diagram.) as I went onto the entrance, I turned right onto what I thought was the parallel. After turning right, I saw touchdown markings in front and realized I was on the active. I called ground and said, 'am I on the active?' ground replied, 'yes, exit next right turn.' I complied. I believe moisture on windshield prevented me from seeing hold short lines, and B737 obstructed my view of correct taxiway. To prevent recurrence, pilots should completely wipe away all moisture or obstructions to vision on windshield prior to taxi. Although I reviewed airport diagram, greater familiarity with airport and situational awareness could have prevented this.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: HIS VISION PARTIALLY OBSCURED BY CONDENSATION, PLT OF BE20 TAXIES ONTO ACTIVE RWY 35 AT SLC.
Narrative: SINGLE PLT KING AIR CAPT. FIRST TIME TO SLC. MORNING DEP (XA00), IFR TO LIT. WINDSHIELD HAD MOISTURE/CONDENSATION. I COPIED CLRNC AND REQUESTED TAXI FROM FBO FOR DEP. GND SAID, 'TAXI TO RWY 17.' I USED WIPERS TO CLR WINDSHIELD, BUT IT ONLY CLRED A PORTION OF WINDSHIELD. THE PARALLEL TXWY I SHOULD HAVE USED WAS OBSTRUCTED FROM MY VISION BY B737 PARKED LONG-WAYS TO MY L FRONT. I SAW AN ENTRANCE TO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS THE TXWY TO MY FAR L. (I KNEW THE TXWY WAS A PARALLEL AND TO MY L FROM THE ARPT DIAGRAM.) AS I WENT ONTO THE ENTRANCE, I TURNED R ONTO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS THE PARALLEL. AFTER TURNING R, I SAW TOUCHDOWN MARKINGS IN FRONT AND REALIZED I WAS ON THE ACTIVE. I CALLED GND AND SAID, 'AM I ON THE ACTIVE?' GND REPLIED, 'YES, EXIT NEXT R TURN.' I COMPLIED. I BELIEVE MOISTURE ON WINDSHIELD PREVENTED ME FROM SEEING HOLD SHORT LINES, AND B737 OBSTRUCTED MY VIEW OF CORRECT TXWY. TO PREVENT RECURRENCE, PLTS SHOULD COMPLETELY WIPE AWAY ALL MOISTURE OR OBSTRUCTIONS TO VISION ON WINDSHIELD PRIOR TO TAXI. ALTHOUGH I REVIEWED ARPT DIAGRAM, GREATER FAMILIARITY WITH ARPT AND SITUATIONAL AWARENESS COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS.
