Narrative:

I received the dxr ATIS and contacted dxr ground with a request to taxi to runway 26 for a wbound departure. Ground cleared me to taxi to runway 26. I monitored ground throughout my taxi. I had also reviewed the airport diagram before leaving the ramp and detected nothing special about the location of hold short lines and proceeded to taxi east on taxiway C. Looking far down taxiway C, I noticed nothing unusual and proceeded to cross intersecting runway 35. I proceeded to the last section of taxiway C to use the full length of runway 26 for takeoff. I performed a run-up/pretkof checklist and proceeded to look for the hold short line. I saw none but stayed well clear of the active runway (runway 26). At this time I felt something was wrong. To this point, I heard nothing on the ground frequency of 121.6. I switched to tower, 119.4, and reported ready for takeoff and was cleared for takeoff on runway 26 with a west departure. As I proceeded to the runway, I was informed by the tower that I was well past the hold short line. I replied that I was sorry, but I had not seen the line. I looked back to see where a friend's plane had stopped for run-up and it was well back on taxiway C. I had never seen a hold short line that far back from the runway and placed on the main part of a taxiway before. Now I was upset, I obviously taxied right past the signage for the hold short line. I have no idea how I could have missed the markings other than the sun angle may have created a glare or a shadow. This incursion was purely unintentional and accidental. I presented no safety problem nor did I venture onto the active runway. I believe that I made this error due to the very unusual location of the hold short line and not paying close enough attention to airport markings. Some of this lack of extra vigilance came from a false sense of 'standard' layout since nothing on the airport diagram indicated anything unusual about taxiway C. In the future, I will maintain additional vigilance while taxiing, though, at the time I felt I was prepared to taxi per review of the taxi diagram. It would have been helpful if ground control would have said something to me right away, at least I could have stopped closer to the hold short line. I also feel that for airports like dxr there should be special notes and markings on the taxi diagram to indicate these nonstandard or the unusual placement of hold short lines. In april, I flew to florida and back with not one single problem taxiing at airports that were unfamiliar, I also did not see hold short lines placed like they are at dxr. I do not know why they are placed that way but they should be moved to a location like the middle of C4. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the hold short line is prior to C4 as you taxi eastbound. It was observed on a subsequent trip to dxr to have the standard signage to indicate its location.

Title: A C150 PLT FINDS HIMSELF BEYOND THE HOLD SHORT LINE THAT IS LOCATED ON THE PARALLEL TXWY C AT DXR.

Narrative: I RECEIVED THE DXR ATIS AND CONTACTED DXR GND WITH A REQUEST TO TAXI TO RWY 26 FOR A WBOUND DEP. GND CLRED ME TO TAXI TO RWY 26. I MONITORED GND THROUGHOUT MY TAXI. I HAD ALSO REVIEWED THE ARPT DIAGRAM BEFORE LEAVING THE RAMP AND DETECTED NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THE LOCATION OF HOLD SHORT LINES AND PROCEEDED TO TAXI E ON TXWY C. LOOKING FAR DOWN TXWY C, I NOTICED NOTHING UNUSUAL AND PROCEEDED TO CROSS INTERSECTING RWY 35. I PROCEEDED TO THE LAST SECTION OF TXWY C TO USE THE FULL LENGTH OF RWY 26 FOR TKOF. I PERFORMED A RUN-UP/PRETKOF CHKLIST AND PROCEEDED TO LOOK FOR THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I SAW NONE BUT STAYED WELL CLR OF THE ACTIVE RWY (RWY 26). AT THIS TIME I FELT SOMETHING WAS WRONG. TO THIS POINT, I HEARD NOTHING ON THE GND FREQ OF 121.6. I SWITCHED TO TWR, 119.4, AND RPTED READY FOR TKOF AND WAS CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 26 WITH A W DEP. AS I PROCEEDED TO THE RWY, I WAS INFORMED BY THE TWR THAT I WAS WELL PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I REPLIED THAT I WAS SORRY, BUT I HAD NOT SEEN THE LINE. I LOOKED BACK TO SEE WHERE A FRIEND'S PLANE HAD STOPPED FOR RUN-UP AND IT WAS WELL BACK ON TXWY C. I HAD NEVER SEEN A HOLD SHORT LINE THAT FAR BACK FROM THE RWY AND PLACED ON THE MAIN PART OF A TXWY BEFORE. I PRESENTED NO SAFETY PROB NOR DID I VENTURE ONTO THE ACTIVE RWY. I BELIEVE THAT I MADE THIS ERROR DUE TO THE VERY UNUSUAL LOCATION OF THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND NOT PAYING CLOSE ENOUGH ATTN TO ARPT MARKINGS. SOME OF THIS LACK OF EXTRA VIGILANCE CAME FROM A FALSE SENSE OF 'STANDARD' LAYOUT SINCE NOTHING ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM INDICATED ANYTHING UNUSUAL ABOUT TXWY C. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL MAINTAIN ADDITIONAL VIGILANCE WHILE TAXIING, THOUGH, AT THE TIME I FELT I WAS PREPARED TO TAXI PER REVIEW OF THE TAXI DIAGRAM. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IF GND CTL WOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING TO ME RIGHT AWAY, AT LEAST I COULD HAVE STOPPED CLOSER TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I ALSO FEEL THAT FOR ARPTS LIKE DXR THERE SHOULD BE SPECIAL NOTES AND MARKINGS ON THE TAXI DIAGRAM TO INDICATE THESE NONSTANDARD OR THE UNUSUAL PLACEMENT OF HOLD SHORT LINES. IN APRIL, I FLEW TO FLORIDA AND BACK WITH NOT ONE SINGLE PROB TAXIING AT ARPTS THAT WERE UNFAMILIAR, I ALSO DID NOT SEE HOLD SHORT LINES PLACED LIKE THEY ARE AT DXR. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THEY ARE PLACED THAT WAY BUT THEY SHOULD BE MOVED TO A LOCATION LIKE THE MIDDLE OF C4. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE HOLD SHORT LINE IS PRIOR TO C4 AS YOU TAXI EBOUND. IT WAS OBSERVED ON A SUBSEQUENT TRIP TO DXR TO HAVE THE STANDARD SIGNAGE TO INDICATE ITS LOCATION.
