Narrative:
A dark night and not very familiar with dca, we were cleared to taxi from the ramp via taxiway J, hold short of runway 4. Controller instructed us to move forward and a bit to the right to allow an exiting aircraft at taxiway north to pass us. I cautiously moved forward and had my attention on wingtip as it was going to be close. When the aircraft was clear, I then realized I'd gone slightly past taxiway J and stopped on taxiway north, holding short of runway 1. My concern is this: I was alert, focused and aware of the potential to go wrong at this point and I nearly did just that. Perhaps a caution note on our airport page would enhance safety at this runway at this spot. The main contributing factor was the distraction of the other aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF A320 BARELY VOIDS A RWY INCURSION AT DCA WHEN ASKED TO PROVIDE CLRNC FOR ANOTHER ACFT EXITING AN ADJACENT RWY.
Narrative: A DARK NIGHT AND NOT VERY FAMILIAR WITH DCA, WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI FROM THE RAMP VIA TXWY J, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 4. CTLR INSTRUCTED US TO MOVE FORWARD AND A BIT TO THE R TO ALLOW AN EXITING ACFT AT TXWY N TO PASS US. I CAUTIOUSLY MOVED FORWARD AND HAD MY ATTN ON WINGTIP AS IT WAS GOING TO BE CLOSE. WHEN THE ACFT WAS CLR, I THEN REALIZED I'D GONE SLIGHTLY PAST TXWY J AND STOPPED ON TXWY N, HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 1. MY CONCERN IS THIS: I WAS ALERT, FOCUSED AND AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL TO GO WRONG AT THIS POINT AND I NEARLY DID JUST THAT. PERHAPS A CAUTION NOTE ON OUR ARPT PAGE WOULD ENHANCE SAFETY AT THIS RWY AT THIS SPOT. THE MAIN CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THE DISTR OF THE OTHER ACFT.
