Narrative:

We were cleared for the ILS runway 31C approach at mdw, told to maintain 2500 ft until established. Approach gave us an intercept heading of 320 degrees which left us too high to continue approach before localizer capture. Captain called for a go around, and we abandoned the approach. ATC gave us a climb to 3000 ft on runway heading, which we did, then we got a right turn to 090 degrees. Turning through about 060 degrees, level at 3000 ft and in IMC, we got a 'caution, terrain' followed almost immediately by a 'terrain, terrain, pull up' GPWS warning. We complied with the terrain avoidance maneuver command, leveled around 3500-3600 ft when the warning ceased, then returned to 3000 ft after clear of conflict. We informed ATC of our GPWS warning, and continued our vectors around for an uneventful approach and landing at mdw runway 31C.

Title: MD80 ON MISSED APCH FROM RWY 31C AT MDW EXPERIENCED GPWS AT 3000 FT DURING A TURN TO 090 DEGS.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR THE ILS RWY 31C APCH AT MDW, TOLD TO MAINTAIN 2500 FT UNTIL ESTABLISHED. APCH GAVE US AN INTERCEPT HDG OF 320 DEGS WHICH LEFT US TOO HIGH TO CONTINUE APCH BEFORE LOC CAPTURE. CAPT CALLED FOR A GAR, AND WE ABANDONED THE APCH. ATC GAVE US A CLB TO 3000 FT ON RWY HDG, WHICH WE DID, THEN WE GOT A R TURN TO 090 DEGS. TURNING THROUGH ABOUT 060 DEGS, LEVEL AT 3000 FT AND IN IMC, WE GOT A 'CAUTION, TERRAIN' FOLLOWED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY BY A 'TERRAIN, TERRAIN, PULL UP' GPWS WARNING. WE COMPLIED WITH THE TERRAIN AVOIDANCE MANEUVER COMMAND, LEVELED AROUND 3500-3600 FT WHEN THE WARNING CEASED, THEN RETURNED TO 3000 FT AFTER CLR OF CONFLICT. WE INFORMED ATC OF OUR GPWS WARNING, AND CONTINUED OUR VECTORS AROUND FOR AN UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG AT MDW RWY 31C.
