Narrative:

During normal flight and descent from FL310 into ord; an intermediate leveloff was made at 10000 ft for 5 mins. Cabin and cockpit crew prepared for final descent and landing (seatbelt sign on) with autoplt and autothrottle engages at 310 KIAS. Received clearance to 7000 ft; selected 250 KTS; thrust reduced to idle; open descent selected at 260 KIAS; and autothrottle/autoplt descent initiated. Immediately leaving 10000 ft; #1 engine had 2-3 compressor stalls; egt immediately exceeded maximum limitation (red) and ECAM directed reduce thrust. The #1 thrust lever was moved from 'cl' detent to 'idle;' egt returned slowly (5-10 seconds) to within normal/caution limitation range and N2 vibration indicated steady 6.6 at idle thrust. Engine thrust lever remained at idle. ATC advised; and an uneventful landing was made at ord (engine #1 idle/engine #2 normal thrust). Clearing the runway; #1 engine was secured and aircraft was taxied to the gate.

Title: FLT CREW OF A320 EXPERIENCE COMPRESSOR STALL AND OVERTEMP OF L ENG UPON DSCNT OUT OF 10000 FT INBOUND TO ORD.

Narrative: DURING NORMAL FLT AND DSCNT FROM FL310 INTO ORD; AN INTERMEDIATE LEVELOFF WAS MADE AT 10000 FT FOR 5 MINS. CABIN AND COCKPIT CREW PREPARED FOR FINAL DSCNT AND LNDG (SEATBELT SIGN ON) WITH AUTOPLT AND AUTOTHROTTLE ENGAGES AT 310 KIAS. RECEIVED CLRNC TO 7000 FT; SELECTED 250 KTS; THRUST REDUCED TO IDLE; OPEN DSCNT SELECTED AT 260 KIAS; AND AUTOTHROTTLE/AUTOPLT DSCNT INITIATED. IMMEDIATELY LEAVING 10000 FT; #1 ENG HAD 2-3 COMPRESSOR STALLS; EGT IMMEDIATELY EXCEEDED MAX LIMITATION (RED) AND ECAM DIRECTED REDUCE THRUST. THE #1 THRUST LEVER WAS MOVED FROM 'CL' DETENT TO 'IDLE;' EGT RETURNED SLOWLY (5-10 SECONDS) TO WITHIN NORMAL/CAUTION LIMITATION RANGE AND N2 VIBRATION INDICATED STEADY 6.6 AT IDLE THRUST. ENG THRUST LEVER REMAINED AT IDLE. ATC ADVISED; AND AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG WAS MADE AT ORD (ENG #1 IDLE/ENG #2 NORMAL THRUST). CLRING THE RWY; #1 ENG WAS SECURED AND ACFT WAS TAXIED TO THE GATE.
