Narrative:

Passenger was found to be using 2 computers off 1 aircraft power port. He said he bought the 'splitter' at xyz retailer. Smoke in cabin; recurring burning smell; device hot to touch and smelling. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the fumes were throughout the cabin before the cause was discovered. The device was confiscated and the power to the power port system disconnected. After a reasonable time the fumes continued so diversion was made because of concern for possible damage to the aircraft system.

Title: A B767 LANDS SHORT OF DEST DUE TO SMOKE AND FUMES CAUSED BY OVERHEATING OF A PAX PROVIDED PWR PORT SPLITTER USED TO OPERATE 2 PERSONAL COMPUTERS.

Narrative: PAX WAS FOUND TO BE USING 2 COMPUTERS OFF 1 ACFT PWR PORT. HE SAID HE BOUGHT THE 'SPLITTER' AT XYZ RETAILER. SMOKE IN CABIN; RECURRING BURNING SMELL; DEVICE HOT TO TOUCH AND SMELLING. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE FUMES WERE THROUGHOUT THE CABIN BEFORE THE CAUSE WAS DISCOVERED. THE DEVICE WAS CONFISCATED AND THE PWR TO THE PWR PORT SYS DISCONNECTED. AFTER A REASONABLE TIME THE FUMES CONTINUED SO DIVERSION WAS MADE BECAUSE OF CONCERN FOR POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO THE ACFT SYS.
