Narrative:

On final approach (ILS runway 31R) at ZZZ; flying at 180 KIAS with flaps 15 degrees. Autoplt was engaged. I called for gear down and flaps 20 degrees. When the flaps approached 20; we received an EICAS message indicating asymmetric leading edge flaps. The captain directed a go around; which I accomplished while he notified tower of our problem and our go around. The captain declared an emergency and asked to be cleared out over the water at 2000 ft. The controller directed us to a heading of 220 degrees and altitude 2000 ft; which I flew. The relief pilot read the QRH procedure and the captain performed the steps while I continued to fly. When we were ready; we asked for the ILS to runway 31L and received vectors and clearance for the approach. ATC advised that crash fire rescue equipment was standing by for our landing. The approach was flown flaps 20 degrees per the QRH at flaps 30 degrees reference +20 KTS. Touchdown was uneventful followed by a normal taxi to the gate with the exception of leaving the flaps set at 20 degrees.

WHEN THE FLAPS APCHED 20; WE RECEIVED AN EICAS MESSAGE INDICATING ASYMMETRIC LEADING EDGE FLAPS. THE CAPT DIRECTED A GAR; WHICH I ACCOMPLISHED WHILE HE NOTIFIED TWR OF OUR PROB AND OUR GAR.
