Narrative:

On climb from teb; misinterpretation of SID caused a deviation in climb/turn instructions. SID states (off runway 24) to turn to 280 degrees upon reaching 1500 ft then at 4.5 DME (teb) climb to 2000 ft. A hurried lack of departure briefing led pilot to wait until 4.5 DME to staring turn to 280 degrees. Co-pilot was looking for traffic; did not notice deviation. Controller queried if we started our turn. Told him we were just passing 4.5 DME and starting turn. He quickly responded by stating that the SID states different turn instructions. No conflict occurred; just a lesson in humility.
