Narrative:
On departure from teb we departed on runway 24. Prior to takeoff I briefed the teb 5 departure runway 24; maintain runway heading; 1500 ft till 4.5 DME; then turn right heading 280 degrees maintain 2000 ft. On departure I noticed an airliner on approach to ewr. I'm guessing that enough distraction to divert my attention from my leveloff altitude. When I looked down; I was 1500 ft and climbing. I could not stop the climb before hitting 1800 ft; and we were talking to a very unhappy controller. I have read about the problems with this departure and thought I was prepared to deal with it. If it had been solid IFR I don't think I would have made this blunder. Sometimes it only takes a small distraction to create a very critical situation.
