Narrative:
When it was apparent that we were going to shut down the left engine; I took control of the aircraft. About 20 mins from ZZZ1; the 'left oil pressure low' light came on. The oil pressure gauge was 30 psi; and the oil quantity was dropping. We accomplished the 'left or right press low light' procedure; then after the oil quantity went to zero; we accomplished the 'engine failure/in flight shutdown' checklist. We declared an emergency and returned to ZZZ1 for landing. We were overweight for landing (131.7). We completed the 'overweight landing' checklist along with the 'one engine landing' checklist. Due to the fact that we shut down the #1 engine and we were dispatched with the APU generator placarded (one generator operation) I exercised my captain's emergency authority per flight manual; and landed overweight. The inbound flight crew wrote up the left engine vibrated on shutdown. Maintenance signed it off as within specifications.

THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE WAS 30 PSI; AND THE OIL QUANTITY WAS DROPPING. WE ACCOMPLISHED THE 'L OR R PRESS LOW LIGHT' PROC; THEN AFTER THE OIL QUANTITY WENT TO ZERO; WE ACCOMPLISHED THE 'ENG FAILURE/IN FLT SHUTDOWN' CHKLIST. WE DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO ZZZ1 FOR LNDG. WE WERE OVERWEIGHT FOR LNDG (131.7). WE COMPLETED THE 'OVERWEIGHT LNDG' CHKLIST ALONG WITH THE 'ONE ENG LNDG' CHKLIST. DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE SHUT DOWN THE #1 ENG AND WE WERE DISPATCHED WITH THE APU GENERATOR PLACARDED (ONE GENERATOR OP) I EXERCISED MY CAPT'S EMER AUTHORITY PER FLT MANUAL; AND LANDED OVERWEIGHT. THE INBOUND FLT CREW WROTE UP THE L ENG VIBRATED ON SHUTDOWN. MAINT SIGNED IT OFF AS WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS.
