Narrative:
On the teb 5 departure at 1500 ft we turned to a 280 degree heading. At that time my first officer put 2000 ft in the altitude select. As he did this the aircraft had not captured the altitude. The aircraft climbed to 1800 ft. As it did this we also got a TA on the TCAS for an aircraft below us. We passed the aircraft went back down to 1500 ft and at 4.5 DME from teb climb to 2000 ft. After landing at ack I called teb tower to make sure that this climb in altitude was not a problem. The tower sup said it was not but to call back in a half hour just to make sure. I did this and he said that there was no problem; but to be more aware next time. Also I will not put next altitude in autoplt till it has captured the first one.
