Narrative:
On arrival at the aircraft; we completed our preflight checks and loaded the estimated weights into the FMC. We were ready for departure when we were notified that we would be delayed for late bags that had to be loaded. When this was finished; we taxied out and requested new weights through ACARS. On receiving them; we entered the new weights into the FMC and revised our takeoff weight and speeds. We then took off and proceeded to iad. On climb out we received a message from dispatch asking if we had received revised weights from load planning. We advised them that we had pulled up new weights through ACARS and advised dispatch of what they were. Dispatch sent us back a message with the correct weights and we realized that there was a difference of approximately 3000 pounds. Dispatch informed us that ramp had loaded 80 extra bags on the aircraft and had not scanned them into the system; so in effect we had taken off 3000 pounds heavier than calculated. The final weights that we had received over ACARS were ZFW/175938 tog/220938 mac/25.9 trim/4.3. The weights we received from dispatch were ZFW/178338 tog/223338 mac/27.2 trim/4.1. Thankfully we did not have any control problems. Dispatch also advised us that this had happened before.

THANKFULLY WE DID NOT HAVE ANY CTL PROBS. DISPATCH ALSO ADVISED US THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED BEFORE.
