Narrative:
The actual pilot report was written on the right engine anti-ice valve. We elected to defer the engine anti-ice valve per the MEL. In our haste; we worked on the left engine anti-ice valve by mistake. The error was not realized until the aircraft had departed. At that time I contacted MD80 maintenance control to inform them of the situation. I have reviewed the maintenance logbook and the gpm on proper MEL procedures. I contacted the MD80 maintenance control desk for a follow-up on the overnight maintenance for aircraft to correct the problem. Contributing factors: it was a hot day; the APU was loud; the mechanics were trying to avoid a maintenance delay.
