Narrative:
With autoplt engaged; aircraft was descending from FL350 to cross powdr at FL190 no speed restr. Aircraft at FL191 oversped by 3-4 KTS and went through FL190. I disconnected the autoplt and recovered the aircraft at FL183 to FL190. ATC gave us a clearance to descend to 13000 ft. Reset aircraft onto autoplt and no further incidents happened. Wrote a maintenance action at the gate in den. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated that while this incident was occurring; the first officer had just left for the restroom and a flight attendant entered. In the cockpit people exchange; he lost concentration and when the overspd warning sounded he attempted to control the overspd and missed the altitude. He knows that the FMA annunciated 'open descent' but he does not know if 'altitude capture' was annunciated at some point passing through to the new cruise altitude. The reporter has been on the aircraft about 2 yrs while the first officer has 6 yrs. This is the first of this type event for either of them.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN A320 IN OPEN DSCNT; OVERSPED NEAR AN ALT CONSTRAINT AND; REMAINING IN OPEN DSCNT; FAILED TO CAPTURE THE MCDU ALT.
Narrative: WITH AUTOPLT ENGAGED; ACFT WAS DSNDING FROM FL350 TO CROSS POWDR AT FL190 NO SPD RESTR. ACFT AT FL191 OVERSPED BY 3-4 KTS AND WENT THROUGH FL190. I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND RECOVERED THE ACFT AT FL183 TO FL190. ATC GAVE US A CLRNC TO DSND TO 13000 FT. RESET ACFT ONTO AUTOPLT AND NO FURTHER INCIDENTS HAPPENED. WROTE A MAINT ACTION AT THE GATE IN DEN. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THAT WHILE THIS INCIDENT WAS OCCURRING; THE FO HAD JUST LEFT FOR THE RESTROOM AND A FLT ATTENDANT ENTERED. IN THE COCKPIT PEOPLE EXCHANGE; HE LOST CONCENTRATION AND WHEN THE OVERSPD WARNING SOUNDED HE ATTEMPTED TO CTL THE OVERSPD AND MISSED THE ALT. HE KNOWS THAT THE FMA ANNUNCIATED 'OPEN DSCNT' BUT HE DOES NOT KNOW IF 'ALT CAPTURE' WAS ANNUNCIATED AT SOME POINT PASSING THROUGH TO THE NEW CRUISE ALT. THE RPTR HAS BEEN ON THE ACFT ABOUT 2 YRS WHILE THE FO HAS 6 YRS. THIS IS THE FIRST OF THIS TYPE EVENT FOR EITHER OF THEM.
