Aircraft at 4000 ft on departure; bird strike in the area of the captain's feet near strake. All engine parameters normal. At FL310; first officer noticed left engine oil temperature 136 degrees; light on. Level at FL320; accomplished 'oil temperature high' checklist. Declared emergency; contacted dispatch. Began return to ZZZ with ZZZ1 as an option. Oil temperature stayed below 135 degrees when engine power was kept high. Approaching ZZZ; engine oil temperature once again passed above 135 degrees. 3 mins prior to landing; 15 min limit in cautionary temperature range was met. Shut down left engine. Landed overweight at 200 FPM. Asked that emergency equipment accompany us to the gate.
