Narrative:
Our clearance from pvg delivery (zspd) was air carrier xyz; cleared to destination (nrt (rjaa) via flight planned route; FL290; runway 34. Initially climb to 900 meters. Emsan 22D departure. Because emsan was not on our flight planned route; we mistakenly briefed and flew the hsn 22D. (Hsn-22D zhoushan -- sounds like emsan 22D on the radio.) as we were tracking southeast on the hsh VOR 142 degree radial; approach control called; stating we were supposed to be going northeast toward emsan. We informed him our flight plan was to ninas thence G327 and we were proceeding to ninas. He gave us a 030 degree heading for aldap. We requested new routing since this was not on our flight plan and were given direct aldap; emsan; surak; lamen flight planned route. We complied with this clearance and nothing more was said. Corrective actions could include not giving sids to points not on a flight plan. We should have queried it sooner. It would be very helpful to not have the same alpha numeric following different SID names; such as hsn 22D and emsan 22D.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B747-200 FLT CREW MISUNDERSTANDS CLRNC AND FLIES WRONG SID WITH SIMILAR SOUNDING NAME AND IDENTICAL ALPHA NUMERIC SUFFIX FROM ZSPD. CLRNC DELIVERY CONTRIBUTED BY FAILING TO PROVIDE FULL RTE CLRNC WHEN CLRED RTE DIFFERED FROM THAT FILED.
Narrative: OUR CLRNC FROM PVG DELIVERY (ZSPD) WAS ACR XYZ; CLRED TO DEST (NRT (RJAA) VIA FLT PLANNED RTE; FL290; RWY 34. INITIALLY CLB TO 900 METERS. EMSAN 22D DEP. BECAUSE EMSAN WAS NOT ON OUR FLT PLANNED RTE; WE MISTAKENLY BRIEFED AND FLEW THE HSN 22D. (HSN-22D ZHOUSHAN -- SOUNDS LIKE EMSAN 22D ON THE RADIO.) AS WE WERE TRACKING SE ON THE HSH VOR 142 DEG RADIAL; APCH CTL CALLED; STATING WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE GOING NE TOWARD EMSAN. WE INFORMED HIM OUR FLT PLAN WAS TO NINAS THENCE G327 AND WE WERE PROCEEDING TO NINAS. HE GAVE US A 030 DEG HDG FOR ALDAP. WE REQUESTED NEW ROUTING SINCE THIS WAS NOT ON OUR FLT PLAN AND WERE GIVEN DIRECT ALDAP; EMSAN; SURAK; LAMEN FLT PLANNED RTE. WE COMPLIED WITH THIS CLRNC AND NOTHING MORE WAS SAID. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE NOT GIVING SIDS TO POINTS NOT ON A FLT PLAN. WE SHOULD HAVE QUERIED IT SOONER. IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL TO NOT HAVE THE SAME ALPHA NUMERIC FOLLOWING DIFFERENT SID NAMES; SUCH AS HSN 22D AND EMSAN 22D.
