Narrative:
Runway 17R departure with the bleco RNAV SID. First officer was flying and commanded 'navigation' after rotation. FMS would not engage with 'performance/navigation not available' displayed in the scratch pad. Captain notified ATC (tower) that we could not comply with the FMS departure. Tower assigned a 170 degree heading and handed off to departure control. Captain confirmed unable to comply with FMS departure with ATC and departure control issued headings towards irw VOR. In our haste to accomplish a quick turn (29 mins) with a gate and aircraft change; we discovered that we had failed to load data in the performance page and the FMS was unable to engage navigation. Contributing factors: 1) 29 min turn with aircraft and gate change. 2) rushed preflight. 3) short single engine taxi with multiple frequency changes. 4) limited exposure to FMS aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 CREW FAILED TO PROGRAM THE FMS AND; THEREFORE; COULD NOT COMPLY WITH THE FMS DEP. THEY REQUESTED AND RECEIVED VECTORS.
Narrative: RWY 17R DEP WITH THE BLECO RNAV SID. FO WAS FLYING AND COMMANDED 'NAV' AFTER ROTATION. FMS WOULD NOT ENGAGE WITH 'PERFORMANCE/NAV NOT AVAILABLE' DISPLAYED IN THE SCRATCH PAD. CAPT NOTIFIED ATC (TWR) THAT WE COULD NOT COMPLY WITH THE FMS DEP. TWR ASSIGNED A 170 DEG HDG AND HANDED OFF TO DEP CTL. CAPT CONFIRMED UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH FMS DEP WITH ATC AND DEP CTL ISSUED HDGS TOWARDS IRW VOR. IN OUR HASTE TO ACCOMPLISH A QUICK TURN (29 MINS) WITH A GATE AND ACFT CHANGE; WE DISCOVERED THAT WE HAD FAILED TO LOAD DATA IN THE PERFORMANCE PAGE AND THE FMS WAS UNABLE TO ENGAGE NAV. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) 29 MIN TURN WITH ACFT AND GATE CHANGE. 2) RUSHED PREFLT. 3) SHORT SINGLE ENG TAXI WITH MULTIPLE FREQ CHANGES. 4) LIMITED EXPOSURE TO FMS ACFT.
