Narrative:

Before takeoff; the PNF and I went over the departure. He said he put the 4.5 DME point on the FMS. The departure is 1500 ft right turn 280 degrees 4.5 DME climb 2000 ft. Normal takeoff. At 1500 ft and in the turn the PNF said next 2000 ft. I thought he meant now to 2000 ft because he set the 4.5 in the FMS. I started to climb and the PNF said no not yet and I pushed over not to climb. I had reached about 1600 ft or 1700 ft and was descending when departure said maintain 1500 ft. There was no conflict and the aircraft behind us also was told to maintain 1500 ft. He also had no conflict. Next time I'll see how he put the mileage in so I'll know exactly and know what to look for also on the FMS.
