Narrative:
After reaching 1500 ft MSL on the runway 24 SID and turning right to 280 degrees; we climbed to 2000 ft instead of waiting till we got to 4.5 DME off teb VOR. This was caused by transferring control of aircraft just before takeoff to the co-pilot and not taking sufficient time by the captain to review the complicated SID. Contributing factors are; night; poorly lighted cockpit; details of SID with altitude restrictions in two different boxes; inexperienced; nonassertive co-pilot with very experienced captain; and captain relying on co-pilot's partial and incorrect briefing of SID.
