Narrative:
On mar/wed/06; I departed pns runway 26 to dts VFR. My on-course heading was 090 degrees. I heard; wrote down; and read back my takeoff clearance of right turn to 090 degrees at or below 1700 ft. I was switched over to departure as I rolled out on a 090 degree heading and 1100 ft. Departure immediately came on and asked for my assigned heading. I read back 090 degrees. Controller told me that we had just crossed in front of a jet on a 2 mi final for runway 17. I told controller that I wrote down and read back 090 degrees. Controller didn't reply. The tower should have caught my readback of 090 degrees; or questioned us after we turned pass 290 degrees. Turn 'to' 290 degrees and turn 'to' 090 degrees are somewhat similar over the radio. I should have listened more closely to the instructions; but my on-course being 090 degrees; I didn't think anything was amiss.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C210 PLT DEPARTING PNS RWY 26 TURNED TO AN INCORRECT HDG AFTER TKOF CREATING AN NMAC WITH A JET APCHING RWY 17.
Narrative: ON MAR/WED/06; I DEPARTED PNS RWY 26 TO DTS VFR. MY ON-COURSE HDG WAS 090 DEGS. I HEARD; WROTE DOWN; AND READ BACK MY TKOF CLRNC OF R TURN TO 090 DEGS AT OR BELOW 1700 FT. I WAS SWITCHED OVER TO DEP AS I ROLLED OUT ON A 090 DEG HDG AND 1100 FT. DEP IMMEDIATELY CAME ON AND ASKED FOR MY ASSIGNED HDG. I READ BACK 090 DEGS. CTLR TOLD ME THAT WE HAD JUST CROSSED IN FRONT OF A JET ON A 2 MI FINAL FOR RWY 17. I TOLD CTLR THAT I WROTE DOWN AND READ BACK 090 DEGS. CTLR DIDN'T REPLY. THE TWR SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT MY READBACK OF 090 DEGS; OR QUESTIONED US AFTER WE TURNED PASS 290 DEGS. TURN 'TO' 290 DEGS AND TURN 'TO' 090 DEGS ARE SOMEWHAT SIMILAR OVER THE RADIO. I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED MORE CLOSELY TO THE INSTRUCTIONS; BUT MY ON-COURSE BEING 090 DEGS; I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING WAS AMISS.
