Narrative:
While en route at FL300; approximately 60 mi east of slt with autoplt #1 engaged; ATC cleared us direct to ape. Captain was flying. First officer on the radio. The #1 FMC was used to enter direct to ape. After ape was executed; both FMC screens blanked and the #1 autoplt disconnected and the aircraft started an immediate climb. FMC screens came back up with a 'please wait' message in the scratch pad. Captain leveled off back at FL300 after a climb to FL302.9. After the re-level at FL300; #2 flight director fail message appeared with loss of flight director on first officer side; message remained for several seconds. When aircraft was level and in trim; #1 autoplt was re-engaged. The yoke immediately moved forward with force and autoplt #1 disconnected again. After aircraft was stabilized; #2 autoplt was engaged without further incident. Upon landing; thorough debrief with maintenance took place. We noted a failure light for an event in-flight was recorded on the maintenance panel. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the cause of the dual FMS failure and the #1 autoplt failure is unknown. #2 autoplt functioned normally and was used the remainder of the flight. Maintenance has released no information on the action taken.
