Narrative:
Called maintenance control to get a long term deferral for some trim missing/cracked on the galley trash bin door. He was asked if it affected the operation of the door. He said no. We discussed if the item was cosmetic and he assured me that it was. At that point we issued a long term deferral for a cosmetic piece of trim on the galley door as being cracked/missing under the gpm procedures. The mechanic never gave maintenance control the actual PIREP. Had the information in the PIREP been conveyed to the controller; then the appropriate MEL would have been issued. The mechanic stated that the item was a cosmetic piece of trim. A later crew had noticed that the trim was missing and it did affect the operation of the door; so they brought it to the attention of maintenance where an MEL was issued for the trash can.

Title: AN EMB WAS DISPATCHED WITH A LONG TERM DEFERRED ITEM APPROVED BY MAINT CTL AS A COSMETIC TRIM ITEM BUT ACTUALLY AFFECTED OP OF THE TRASH DOOR.
Narrative: CALLED MAINT CTL TO GET A LONG TERM DEFERRAL FOR SOME TRIM MISSING/CRACKED ON THE GALLEY TRASH BIN DOOR. HE WAS ASKED IF IT AFFECTED THE OP OF THE DOOR. HE SAID NO. WE DISCUSSED IF THE ITEM WAS COSMETIC AND HE ASSURED ME THAT IT WAS. AT THAT POINT WE ISSUED A LONG TERM DEFERRAL FOR A COSMETIC PIECE OF TRIM ON THE GALLEY DOOR AS BEING CRACKED/MISSING UNDER THE GPM PROCS. THE MECH NEVER GAVE MAINT CTL THE ACTUAL PIREP. HAD THE INFO IN THE PIREP BEEN CONVEYED TO THE CTLR; THEN THE APPROPRIATE MEL WOULD HAVE BEEN ISSUED. THE MECH STATED THAT THE ITEM WAS A COSMETIC PIECE OF TRIM. A LATER CREW HAD NOTICED THAT THE TRIM WAS MISSING AND IT DID AFFECT THE OP OF THE DOOR; SO THEY BROUGHT IT TO THE ATTN OF MAINT WHERE AN MEL WAS ISSUED FOR THE TRASH CAN.
