Narrative:
I received a gate call from aircraft Y at gate. The first officer crew oxygen mask wasn't functioning properly. So; I went up to the airplane and took the unfunctional oxygen mask out. I went to the aircraft parts department to look for a new mask. We looked at the shelf under air traffic area chapter. We found 1 oxygen mask looked exactly the same; but the part number was different. So; I went to ask the store personnel if the part is good for the MD80 aircraft. They checked on the computer and told me it was a right part for the MD80. So; I went back out and installed on the airplane. All function checks normal. So; I signed off the item and released the airplane. After I came back to fill out the parts tag; the store personnel told me the oxygen mask is only for the non-modification type aircraft. I called the company MD80 coordinator about the incident. They told me the part is not good for that airplane. At that time; the airplane had already pushed out. Then we had to contact the flight crew and return the airplane back to the gate. After that I went up; removed the wrong oxygen mask; and installed the correct oxygen mask on the first officer's side. To prevent this type of incident happening in the future; I should check the ipc first; make sure it is the right effectivity for the airplane before I install the parts on the airplane.

Title: AN MD80 WAS DISPATCHED AND RECALLED TO THE GATE TO REPLACE AN INCORRECT FO'S OXYGEN MASK. INCORRECT MASK INSTALLED PRIOR TO DISPATCH.
Narrative: I RECEIVED A GATE CALL FROM ACFT Y AT GATE. THE FO CREW OXYGEN MASK WASN'T FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. SO; I WENT UP TO THE AIRPLANE AND TOOK THE UNFUNCTIONAL OXYGEN MASK OUT. I WENT TO THE ACFT PARTS DEPT TO LOOK FOR A NEW MASK. WE LOOKED AT THE SHELF UNDER ATA CHAPTER. WE FOUND 1 OXYGEN MASK LOOKED EXACTLY THE SAME; BUT THE PART NUMBER WAS DIFFERENT. SO; I WENT TO ASK THE STORE PERSONNEL IF THE PART IS GOOD FOR THE MD80 ACFT. THEY CHKED ON THE COMPUTER AND TOLD ME IT WAS A RIGHT PART FOR THE MD80. SO; I WENT BACK OUT AND INSTALLED ON THE AIRPLANE. ALL FUNCTION CHKS NORMAL. SO; I SIGNED OFF THE ITEM AND RELEASED THE AIRPLANE. AFTER I CAME BACK TO FILL OUT THE PARTS TAG; THE STORE PERSONNEL TOLD ME THE OXYGEN MASK IS ONLY FOR THE NON-MODIFICATION TYPE ACFT. I CALLED THE COMPANY MD80 COORDINATOR ABOUT THE INCIDENT. THEY TOLD ME THE PART IS NOT GOOD FOR THAT AIRPLANE. AT THAT TIME; THE AIRPLANE HAD ALREADY PUSHED OUT. THEN WE HAD TO CONTACT THE FLT CREW AND RETURN THE AIRPLANE BACK TO THE GATE. AFTER THAT I WENT UP; REMOVED THE WRONG OXYGEN MASK; AND INSTALLED THE CORRECT OXYGEN MASK ON THE FO'S SIDE. TO PREVENT THIS TYPE OF INCIDENT HAPPENING IN THE FUTURE; I SHOULD CHK THE IPC FIRST; MAKE SURE IT IS THE RIGHT EFFECTIVITY FOR THE AIRPLANE BEFORE I INSTALL THE PARTS ON THE AIRPLANE.
