Narrative:
We were flying from pauki intersection to mol VOR at FL270. The controller told us to climb to FL280 so we started an approximately 700 FPM climb. Passing FL275 we noticed an aircraft at our 1 O'clock position on TCAS at FL270 at approximately 8 mi. We increased our climb rate and at the same time the controller told us to expedite our climb and report reaching FL280. At approximately FL277 we received a TCAS RA to climb. We had acquired the traffic visually by this time and passed behind and 1000 ft above it when we leveled at FL280. Cause: the controller possibly gave us the climb later than she wanted (final cruise altitude was FL340).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD88 FLT CREW EXPERIENCED TCAS RA AT APPROX FL270 DURING ZDC INITIATED CLB; TCAS RESPONSE SAVED REQUIRED SEPARATION.
Narrative: WE WERE FLYING FROM PAUKI INTXN TO MOL VOR AT FL270. THE CTLR TOLD US TO CLB TO FL280 SO WE STARTED AN APPROX 700 FPM CLB. PASSING FL275 WE NOTICED AN ACFT AT OUR 1 O'CLOCK POS ON TCAS AT FL270 AT APPROX 8 MI. WE INCREASED OUR CLB RATE AND AT THE SAME TIME THE CTLR TOLD US TO EXPEDITE OUR CLB AND RPT REACHING FL280. AT APPROX FL277 WE RECEIVED A TCAS RA TO CLB. WE HAD ACQUIRED THE TFC VISUALLY BY THIS TIME AND PASSED BEHIND AND 1000 FT ABOVE IT WHEN WE LEVELED AT FL280. CAUSE: THE CTLR POSSIBLY GAVE US THE CLB LATER THAN SHE WANTED (FINAL CRUISE ALT WAS FL340).
