Narrative:
I was cleared by clearance delivery VFR from ZZZ1 to ZZZ2 and to contact the tower for my transponder code. The transponder code was received and I was cleared by the tower to takeoff on a south departure; and to contact departure control after takeoff. Takeoff was normal up to the point at which I attempted to contact departure control. At this time; I found that I had lost all communications and electrical power due to a total electrical failure. I immediately switched my transponder to 7600 (not knowing if it was transmitting) and continued attempts to contact departure. As I had been cleared to my destination of ZZZ2 and determining that the aircraft was flyable even with the electrical failure and decided that the best course of action was to continue on the approved clearance and clear the class B airspace. The flight was continued at an altitude of 1500 ft and an emergency landing was made at ZZZ2 and the aircraft was immediately grounded. Subsequent investigation revealed that the generator had failed and was no longer providing current to the system.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: BE35 PLT SUFFERS LOST COM IN CLASS B AIRSPACE DUE TO TOTAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED BY CLRNC DELIVERY VFR FROM ZZZ1 TO ZZZ2 AND TO CONTACT THE TWR FOR MY XPONDER CODE. THE XPONDER CODE WAS RECEIVED AND I WAS CLRED BY THE TWR TO TKOF ON A S DEP; AND TO CONTACT DEP CTL AFTER TKOF. TKOF WAS NORMAL UP TO THE POINT AT WHICH I ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT DEP CTL. AT THIS TIME; I FOUND THAT I HAD LOST ALL COMS AND ELECTRICAL PWR DUE TO A TOTAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE. I IMMEDIATELY SWITCHED MY XPONDER TO 7600 (NOT KNOWING IF IT WAS XMITTING) AND CONTINUED ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT DEP. AS I HAD BEEN CLRED TO MY DEST OF ZZZ2 AND DETERMINING THAT THE ACFT WAS FLYABLE EVEN WITH THE ELECTRICAL FAILURE AND DECIDED THAT THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION WAS TO CONTINUE ON THE APPROVED CLRNC AND CLR THE CLASS B AIRSPACE. THE FLT WAS CONTINUED AT AN ALT OF 1500 FT AND AN EMER LNDG WAS MADE AT ZZZ2 AND THE ACFT WAS IMMEDIATELY GROUNDED. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE GENERATOR HAD FAILED AND WAS NO LONGER PROVIDING CURRENT TO THE SYS.
