Narrative:
Departed on march/wed/2006 for first solo cross country. Became disoriented while looking for ipl. Went into military airspace and landed on runway 30 at njk. After leaving njk; I spoke to imperial unicom and they told me to use the VOR tracking which I began tracking outbound instead of inbound. I crossed over the mexico border about 8.5 miles before turning back. I knew I had flown too far southeast and realized I was tracking outbound. Soon after I landed at my destination. Contributing factors: I did not properly use VOR navigation; I was only using my GPS. At the time I felt it would be better to land at the military airport so if I needed to be questioned I would be on the ground and accessible. I will work with my instructor more on VOR navigation and cross country.
