Narrative:
I was en route from 39N to N07 traveling west of controled airspace of mmu and cdw; and below ewr airspace at 2700 ft MSL. It was VMC and I was flying by compass and GPS since the HSI was inoperable. I programmed the garmin 530 direct to N07. I began my descent. A message came up on the 530 that transfer of data couldn't be done. This was the first time I've flown this plane since updating the data card; and I thought this meant I couldn't properly navigate using the 530. I then decided to use the 430 garmin to navigate. Afterwards I noticed on the moving map that I was just inside mmu airspace at approximately 2400 ft. I then turned north; exited the airspace and flew direct N07. Contributing factors were unfamiliarity with the 530; low time in airplane; HSI inoperable; became distracted and lost situational awareness. More time in the plane; correctly updating the 530; and repair of HSI should be corrective.

MORE TIME IN THE PLANE; CORRECTLY UPDATING THE 530; AND REPAIR OF HSI SHOULD BE CORRECTIVE.
