Narrative:
While taxiing out for takeoff; we tried to contact queue. There was no response. We then questioned ground about queue and he told us that queue was not in operation. Since the beginning of dfw RNAV departure program; no queue without runway and first fix information has always meant no RNAV procedure. After takeoff runway 18L; we flew a heading which we thought was assigned. The heading was either runway heading or close to it. Exact heading flown cannot be recalled. During the climb out on this heading; we heard the departure controller clear an aircraft to turn right which put this aircraft on a crossing course with us. At that point we realized something was not correct. We were about to question the controller when he asked if we were going to make our turn to the west. We then advised him we were not on the SID and flying the southernly heading. He instructed us to fly 290 degrees ands stop our climb; which is what we did. There was no TCAS warning or alert. The rest of the flight was normal.

Title: E140 FLT CREW LEARNS THE QUEUE CTLR WAS NOT IN USE AT DFW AND DECIDED THAT CANCELED THEIR ASSIGNED RNAV SID. CONFLICT ENSUES WHEN THEY FLY RWY HDG ON TKOF.

SINCE THE BEGINNING OF DFW RNAV DEP PROGRAM; NO QUEUE WITHOUT RWY AND FIRST FIX INFO HAS ALWAYS MEANT NO RNAV PROC. AFTER TKOF RWY 18L; WE FLEW A HDG WHICH WE THOUGHT WAS ASSIGNED. THE HDG WAS EITHER RWY HDG OR CLOSE TO IT. EXACT HDG FLOWN CANNOT BE RECALLED. DURING THE CLBOUT ON THIS HDG; WE HEARD THE DEP CTLR CLR AN ACFT TO TURN R WHICH PUT THIS ACFT ON A XING COURSE WITH US. AT THAT POINT WE REALIZED SOMETHING WAS NOT CORRECT. WE WERE ABOUT TO QUESTION THE CTLR WHEN HE ASKED IF WE WERE GOING TO MAKE OUR TURN TO THE W. WE THEN ADVISED HIM WE WERE NOT ON THE SID AND FLYING THE SOUTHERNLY HDG. HE INSTRUCTED US TO FLY 290 DEGS ANDS STOP OUR CLB; WHICH IS WHAT WE DID. THERE WAS NO TCAS WARNING OR ALERT. THE REST OF THE FLT WAS NORMAL.
