Narrative:
While en route; we encountered severe turbulence at FL350 at rinny intersection that resulted in an altitude loss of approximately 8000 ft. We were IMC at the start of the descent and were unable to control the descent until we broke out in the clear. We were using WX radar; however; we were not painting any WX. About 10 mins prior to this turbulence we asked ZMA for a ride report and were told that no one had complained. We were unable to contact ZMA directly during the altitude loss but we did relay our situation via an air carrier Y flight.
