Narrative:

On the korry arrival to lga just past renue intersection; the controller cleared us to fly up the river and descend from 7000 to 4000 ft. In the descent; we received a TCAS alert and subsequent climb command. We executed a climb via TCAS guidance and informed ATC. We continued the climb to comply with TCAS guidance. The controller said that the VFR traffic had us in sight. TCAS indicated the traffic was 100 ft below us. First officer said he saw the traffic at the last second about 100 ft low as it passed under our nose at about 1 O'clock position. I never saw the traffic. The in-flight visibility was approximately 1.5 mi.
