Narrative:
En route to frg we were given slowest possible speed for spacing into kennedy airspace. We were cleared to boton intersection on the camrn arrival and given holding instructions over boton as published. I (first officer) put boton into the GNS/xls and tried to enter the holding pattern into the FMS. At the time I entered direct to boton we were approximately 14 NM from the fix. The captain (PF) said we were over boton and he advised I call center and advise entering the hold. I told him we couldn't be over the intersection yet; as we were just 14 NM away. He started the turn for direct entry into the hold. I again told the captain we couldn't be over the fix yet. He said we just crossed the fix. I reported entering the hold and the controller advised us we were 12 mi from the hold and better find the fix. I immediately advised the controller we were having problems with our FMS; and his response stated we better figure out where we are and find the fix. I (PNF) switched to green navigation (raw VOR); entered the 049 degree radial; and observed the DME identify the holding fix. We got established on the 049 degree radial but overshot our fix by 10 NM. At that point we noticed a message light on our FMS that read 'GPS miscompare.' we could not go direct to boton on the GPS. It seemed as if boton did not exist on our GPS. We got established on the 049 degree radial and called entering the hold and held for 30 mins or so without the GPS. The controller did not say anything else about our dilemma. He acknowledged the hold.

Narrative: ENRTE TO FRG WE WERE GIVEN SLOWEST POSSIBLE SPD FOR SPACING INTO KENNEDY AIRSPACE. WE WERE CLRED TO BOTON INTXN ON THE CAMRN ARR AND GIVEN HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS OVER BOTON AS PUBLISHED. I (FO) PUT BOTON INTO THE GNS/XLS AND TRIED TO ENTER THE HOLDING PATTERN INTO THE FMS. AT THE TIME I ENTERED DIRECT TO BOTON WE WERE APPROX 14 NM FROM THE FIX. THE CAPT (PF) SAID WE WERE OVER BOTON AND HE ADVISED I CALL CTR AND ADVISE ENTERING THE HOLD. I TOLD HIM WE COULDN'T BE OVER THE INTXN YET; AS WE WERE JUST 14 NM AWAY. HE STARTED THE TURN FOR DIRECT ENTRY INTO THE HOLD. I AGAIN TOLD THE CAPT WE COULDN'T BE OVER THE FIX YET. HE SAID WE JUST CROSSED THE FIX. I RPTED ENTERING THE HOLD AND THE CTLR ADVISED US WE WERE 12 MI FROM THE HOLD AND BETTER FIND THE FIX. I IMMEDIATELY ADVISED THE CTLR WE WERE HAVING PROBS WITH OUR FMS; AND HIS RESPONSE STATED WE BETTER FIGURE OUT WHERE WE ARE AND FIND THE FIX. I (PNF) SWITCHED TO GREEN NAV (RAW VOR); ENTERED THE 049 DEG RADIAL; AND OBSERVED THE DME IDENT THE HOLDING FIX. WE GOT ESTABLISHED ON THE 049 DEG RADIAL BUT OVERSHOT OUR FIX BY 10 NM. WE GOT ESTABLISHED ON THE 049 DEG RADIAL AND CALLED ENTERING THE HOLD AND HELD FOR 30 MINS OR SO WITHOUT THE GPS. THE CTLR DID NOT SAY ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT OUR DILEMMA. HE ACKNOWLEDGED THE HOLD.
