Narrative:
We were cleared direct beuty; cross beuty at 10000 ft. We went direct and went down to 10000 ft. After beuty; I believe we went directly to apple; not the next two points on the arrival. After trying to sort it out in the cockpit; the controller asked us about our heading; by then we were going direct to apple again. Then he cleared us direct to lga; after that the flight was uneventful. We loaded and checked route and legs using company procedures.callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the first officer could not add any additional information on this incident. He has over 12 years experience on the MD80 and has encountered this type of problem twice before.
