Narrative:
Our aircraft was parked at the FBO ramp. Both myself and the other pilot were aware of construction operations in the vicinity of the intersection of taxiway K and K2. Ground control instructed us to taxi to runway 17 via taxiway K. In addition; the controller told us to pass behind a 'cherokee' single engine aircraft that was exiting the runway (runway 17) in the vicinity of K2. We complied and acknowledged the instructions. We passed behind the cherokee and approached K2 heading approximately +/-300 degrees. At this point it became difficult (many barricades and heavy equipment) to determine where taxiway K was located. It seemed that taxiway K was located west of the construction area when in fact it is temporarily located and rerouted east of its normal location. As a result; the PF taxied towards K2 expecting a right turn onto taxiway K. His right turn was actually onto runway 35. This occurred while my head was down and I was performing taxi checks which is my company's policy. As soon as we were runway 35; we knew what had happened and quickly exited the runway at taxiway P.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ASTRA IAI-1125 FLT CREW HAS A RWY INCURSION AT SLC.
Narrative: OUR ACFT WAS PARKED AT THE FBO RAMP. BOTH MYSELF AND THE OTHER PLT WERE AWARE OF CONSTRUCTION OPS IN THE VICINITY OF THE INTXN OF TXWY K AND K2. GND CTL INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI TO RWY 17 VIA TXWY K. IN ADDITION; THE CTLR TOLD US TO PASS BEHIND A 'CHEROKEE' SINGLE ENG ACFT THAT WAS EXITING THE RWY (RWY 17) IN THE VICINITY OF K2. WE COMPLIED AND ACKNOWLEDGED THE INSTRUCTIONS. WE PASSED BEHIND THE CHEROKEE AND APCHED K2 HDG APPROX +/-300 DEGS. AT THIS POINT IT BECAME DIFFICULT (MANY BARRICADES AND HVY EQUIP) TO DETERMINE WHERE TXWY K WAS LOCATED. IT SEEMED THAT TXWY K WAS LOCATED W OF THE CONSTRUCTION AREA WHEN IN FACT IT IS TEMPORARILY LOCATED AND REROUTED E OF ITS NORMAL LOCATION. AS A RESULT; THE PF TAXIED TOWARDS K2 EXPECTING A R TURN ONTO TXWY K. HIS R TURN WAS ACTUALLY ONTO RWY 35. THIS OCCURRED WHILE MY HEAD WAS DOWN AND I WAS PERFORMING TAXI CHKS WHICH IS MY COMPANY'S POLICY. AS SOON AS WE WERE RWY 35; WE KNEW WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND QUICKLY EXITED THE RWY AT TXWY P.
