Narrative:

SID briefed by crew and understood prior to taxi. At hold short PIC looked at chart area to review departure; but sic had airport diagram up. (Crew shares single set of plates held on co-pilot side.) PIC did not ask sic to display SID. At 1500 ft PIC leveled aircraft stated 'left turn to 190 degrees.' sic said 'right turn to 280 degrees.' left turn commenced; SID reviewed by both pilots; right turn back to 280 degrees commenced. Several seconds later ATC assigned 290 degree heading/climb to 4000 ft. ATC called aircraft well left of course and wanted to know if we were doing teb 5 departure. Handed off soon thereafter. Problem arose because PIC assumed he knew procedure. Should have checked it at hold short. Bad crew coordination. No real rapport in cockpit. Maybe two sets of plates; one per crewmember. FMS was down. Normal situational awareness tool unavailable.
