Narrative:
Just after top of descent; we received an ACARS message saying; 'attention crew -- autoland message please perform autoland on next occasion.' we checked the release and the aircraft was not autoland authority/authorized. Also; the screw on the dash indicated that the aircraft was only 'CAT IIIA hgs only.' if we hadn't checked; the company would have tricked us into violating the FARS in that we would be performing a maneuver that the aircraft was not certified for (indicated both by the status on the dash and the release). Also; we were landing on runway 34 in seattle and you cannot do an autoland on those runways anyways. The night before going into dca we got the same message. That is just stupid going into there on that extremely short runway! Have the dispatchers take a look before they have this message sent to the crews! Is the aircraft authority/authorized to perform this maneuver? Also; have them look at the destination to check and make sure that it is an option. Runway 34 in seattle isn't one of those. Also; they need to see that given the runway length; is it a smart thing to do?
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-800 FLT CREW GOT MULTIPLE MESSAGES FROM DISPATCH ASKING FOR AN AUTOLAND WHEN THE ACFT WAS PLACARDED 'CAT III HGS ONLY.'
Narrative: JUST AFTER TOP OF DSCNT; WE RECEIVED AN ACARS MESSAGE SAYING; 'ATTN CREW -- AUTOLAND MESSAGE PLEASE PERFORM AUTOLAND ON NEXT OCCASION.' WE CHKED THE RELEASE AND THE ACFT WAS NOT AUTOLAND AUTH. ALSO; THE SCREW ON THE DASH INDICATED THAT THE ACFT WAS ONLY 'CAT IIIA HGS ONLY.' IF WE HADN'T CHKED; THE COMPANY WOULD HAVE TRICKED US INTO VIOLATING THE FARS IN THAT WE WOULD BE PERFORMING A MANEUVER THAT THE ACFT WAS NOT CERTIFIED FOR (INDICATED BOTH BY THE STATUS ON THE DASH AND THE RELEASE). ALSO; WE WERE LNDG ON RWY 34 IN SEATTLE AND YOU CANNOT DO AN AUTOLAND ON THOSE RWYS ANYWAYS. THE NIGHT BEFORE GOING INTO DCA WE GOT THE SAME MESSAGE. THAT IS JUST STUPID GOING INTO THERE ON THAT EXTREMELY SHORT RWY! HAVE THE DISPATCHERS TAKE A LOOK BEFORE THEY HAVE THIS MESSAGE SENT TO THE CREWS! IS THE ACFT AUTH TO PERFORM THIS MANEUVER? ALSO; HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE DEST TO CHK AND MAKE SURE THAT IT IS AN OPTION. RWY 34 IN SEATTLE ISN'T ONE OF THOSE. ALSO; THEY NEED TO SEE THAT GIVEN THE RWY LENGTH; IS IT A SMART THING TO DO?
